I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope

Mostly I am on hear tonight to holla:

It feels so good, after three months watching the concentrated efforts, to see the ground work of the activists rallying in response to Eric Garner tonight.

My trip was so bitchen, but I am tired now and in need of quiet because I feel like I am settling a lot of things.

There is this project which makes me yearn and yumm.  It's nice, restores a small elemental part of me, experiencing music seemingly somewhat worth the production..

Finally.  Mostly I just want T.S. Elliot to speak for me.

from East Coker italics mine

III.

O dark dark dark. They all go into the dark,
The vacant interstellar spaces, the vacant into the vacant,
The captains, merchant bankers, eminent men of letters,
The generous patrons of art, the statesmen and the rulers,
Distinguished civil servants, chairmen of many committees,
Industrial lords and petty contractors, all go into the dark,
And dark the Sun and Moon, and the Almanach de Gotha
And the Stock Exchange Gazette, the Directory of Directors,
And cold the sense and lost the motive of action.
And we all go with them, into the silent funeral,
Nobody's funeral, for there is no one to bury.
I said to my soul, be still, and let the dark come upon you
Which shall be the darkness of God. As, in a theatre,
The lights are extinguished, for the scene to be changed
With a hollow rumble of wings, with a movement of darkness on darkness,
And we know that the hills and the trees, the distant panorama
And the bold imposing facade are all being rolled away—
Or as, when an underground train, in the tube, stops too long between stations
And the conversation rises and slowly fades into silence
And you see behind every face the mental emptiness deepen
Leaving only the growing terror of nothing to think about;
Or when, under ether, the mind is conscious but conscious of nothing—
I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought:
So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.
Whisper of running streams, and winter lightning.
The wild thyme unseen and the wild strawberry,
The laughter in the garden, echoed ecstasy
Not lost, but requiring, pointing to the agony
Of death and birth.

SponDown. On reaching goals, and hulahooping

The sunshine is what woke me, yellow light through the house and it was only 7 am.  I slept all night on the couch, which I almost never do and it felt like a treat because Tuesday is my Saturday morning one of the two days of the week that my alarm doesn't go off at 4:45 so if I want to stay up late playing sonar til I pass out in front of the TV I can.

Now it's gorgeous out, I was thinking I would go running before I drive to Salisbury so Chico can finish my tattoo. I spent almost three hours fucking around on facebook and the endless zoom of the intraweb, which felt good just letting my brain work it all out that schedule schedule discipline of working two jobs in the service industry hello hello how can i help you oh let me get that for you mam oh no thank you SMILE SMILE LAUGH GENTLE (take it easy) yep you bet, have a great day.

Tribe was the first song on my Pandora, I am full with the things that make me full.  I am heartened by the heart that makes me love, I am loving the loves that hearten my loving heart.  I am full with my life, it is not even mid-March, it is sunny out, there is good music there are great fun frieds who are wild and learning to be wilder still and the first part of my book is done.  The first part of my book is DONE!

I can't believe I am going to say this because for some reason Jay-Z is my fave hiphopper to hate on which has nothing to do with him and most definitely goes back to funny teasy rivalry with my brother, soooo: D.O.A. and the guitar in it is siiick.   The serendipity of that is that it is a song against using the auto-tuner, which just lately I learned from my boy Ben is the mechanical device used to correct pitch and loop voice samples and so forth and that makes me sick, and is what I hate about contemporary music.  All the contemporary music shit and tv shit and so forth.  WHERE the hell is original thought original anything?  People are scared of originality (same ol boring ass story: people are SCARED of themselves.  People will always thusly fear what is sacred. ) I am mad in to rock and roll right now.  Last week we went to the Pub in town the one on 8th street which back in the day was sorta seedy but since the renovations is the place to be and the women rocked the shit out of that place and I felt so happy to be a grrrl, to be in to music as a grrrl hearing the grrrls who're also in to music and performance and their own bright shine, to be on top of my life, to have turned in 34 pages the day before to Erika.  That night kicked off four of running of lots of work and just little tiny snips of sleep.  My dad says "I'll sleep when I'm dead!" so maybe its an in the genes kinda thing.

Last night I told Terra I better get out of the way before I step on a small kid with my stilleto, we were at a baby shower for our friend and coworker and I had just set down the dip I made on to the table.  Stilletos and dip that's about what I have to offer a baby shower, that and the wise wild wisdom but it wasn't a gathering quite like that so I was just dressed up, clearly single, kid-less, and pretty in spring pink.  My other single gal friends were similar, on the outskirts, some drunk.  There are a lot of us and I guess the reason I am happy to be pretty and single in spring pink is because I went through this whole baby thing, after the marriage thing in the fall, this is because of course I am going to be an aunt, and each time some new tribal "next" gets tossed in to the ring I have to run the gauntlet of my self to make sure I am on the correct, or at least feeling mostly sure of the course in my life over which I am traveling, at least in this moment, being who I am. Thusly making happy the heart and loves of my life that equate what I "want."

And isn't that it, what we want, and it's funny little recipe made from what we love and who we seem to think we are or try to be.  After seeing Cindy the other week I was brought so clearly back to when I lived in Chestertown and was always, always on the go but not ever engaged in my daily acts, in my moments to moments.  Never having time to stop and chit chat head always running towards the next thing the next the...and most of all always with the underlying pressing feeling pushing me on gogogo by that feeling that there was something else which needed to get done, always this highwired tightness of not being able to relax and feel comfortable.  Never being able to find lasting comfort.  That is so, so gone now and I knew I've felt different for quite a while, peaceful and on solid ground instead of on the run, but it wasn't until my visit with Cin that I saw it for what it was.  That unsettled runningness comes up for peaked moments sure, when and only if I get in a self-hate frenzy of questioning where I am at right now or being too hard on myself.  But there is such adequate, simple relief found even in the challenging middle ground place between meeting and working towards my goals:   I have taken the time to identify what I want by being true to who I am and what I love.  So now I just take the time to engage each day moment to moment by being her.  I have goals and can relax and enjoy life as I be the woman bringing them to fruit.  It's so different, so real and bliss-full to live whole, right where you are.

It's a full life, my hours are busier than they probably ever were in Chestertown, but my energy is fulfilled and that's all the difference.  That is all to say about that now my head is sort of cleaned of original thought and also Dynamite by The Roots is on so I think I want to get up and hulahoop a while now.

Give me a little corner.

It'd be nice if it were snowing is all I can think, warm and nestled bed and blankets around me deep and rounded as an acorn shell.  Would they close the coffee shop if it were good and snowy out?  Didn't I just fall asleep?  It was 11:30 last night when I woke for just a sec to turn out the light Erika's book half across my chest and half-covered by my sheet.  It's quarter past four now I've been awake a half hour could've fallen back to sleep but it would've been tough then, so tough to get out of bed when the alarm goes at 4:45.

When did this become my life?  Dad asked what will you do Monday with your day off.  I was laying on the sofa still in my softest pjs it was late in the afternoon on Sunday so late the sun was almost down I'd been there since pretty much the night before.  22 hours on my feet Friday and Saturday so tiiiiiiired.

Write I said back to him as if the answer duhhhh was summer and the question was what season do you prefer freezing cold winter with it's two hours of light or summer warm beaches and fresh air and swimming and 15 hours of daytime outside.  I will write, oh yea that's what I'm doing here living for free at mom and dad's.  Not making enough to pay rent anyway.

Ohhhhhhh here we are again.  At least the bed at mom's is the most comfortable one I have ever slept in ever.  It's my last thougt of the day also usually my waking one--ahhh god this bed is so amazing thank you so much.  Yowza I so haaate being cold. Then I say a prayer for the people who are cold right now, hungry, sleeping on the frozen hardass street.  Please please send them some tiny bit of ease.   Thank you World for all the good and blessings in my life I choose to be open to you and the good and the blessings.  I choose to wake with a happy heart just for today I choose to be gratitude in motion to show thanks for all the good in life I've got....Sometimes it's all I repeat again and again my mantra that leads me through the dark steepled house with the drafts and quiet in the corners and the floor that pads and creeks in all the same places each morning.  Soon there will be smells of coffee beans and muffins baking and soon after that the pinking blush of sun over Ocean City on the horizon.  The black marks of geese through the air.

Unless it snows, and then like yesterday it's me, happy.  Me da um cantinho.  Portuguese for Give me a little corner. I read that in Committed.  And that is me, and the words and me.  Maybe the book is not coming how it did but ohh give me a day to wake up and stay in my sweet bed and read all morning hot coffee nearby, literal stacks of books piled all around.  Then writing for the rest of the day still propped up in my bed all the pillows my little village and my laptop and me and the words and me and getting out of bed just to shower or eat then put my softies on again and back in I go.  Only other time I'm up is just to lay across my floor propped on pillows for a change of pace from leaning against the wall in bed.  Poetry journals, litmags library books on and on. Atlas wide open.  Imagination.  Music on the I-tunes.

Facebook to take a break here and there.

Give me a little corner.

It's all I'll ever need.

To believe in this living...

Opposite Direction is playing in the corner it's half-time the Ravens are up and Jotto's on her way to meet dad and I for half-price pubgrup and orange crushes for them. They are Sue and Rich's favorite a talented band that plays mostly 70's covers. Last summer they were here listening to the music every single Sunday. John Prine is on right now. My heart tweaks, I look out the zipped-up plastic window-side at the harbor, the big local fishing boats, the seagulls fighting just above the water of the bay. It is perfect blue and gold out. The kind of day that makes people just stare wistfully at the sea. It's November in West Ocean City and when the sunlight goes low and yellow across the dusk sky I walk to the top of the street past the fish hauls and wharf boats to where you can look directly across the water to the inlet, the roller coaster and water tower of downtown each high on the horizon, and I take pictures in my favorite light of the day. It's cold out, my hands get so cold I cant feel my fingers walking back to Harborside to meet dad.

My cousin Timmy turned 21 here, Sean and Jamie and some of us spent the Sunday after they got engaged here, two Christmas' ago Seanie when she walked to the ladies room sat at these exact highboys and told me he was going to ask Jame to marry him. We told her we were crying about our Pappaw when she came back.

It's nice, these little places we find ourselves when we happen to find ourselves "in-between." Jotto and I sit at the corner and watch enough of the 4th quarter together to know that the Ravens are going to win, then she leaves to get her son. I happily agree to help her paint her new apartment later this week and yet again, as I hug her to leave, this feeling of absolute gratitude washes through me. This sense of utter thankfulness that is translating today as satisfaction, just simple in-moment satisfaction, for the good things that exist in my life. It's the same exact way I feel looking out the window, listening to Sue and Rich's favorite band cover John Prine. When she leaves dad grabs my arm and gushes O sis! I love this song. It's Ventura Highway. We turn on our stools, rest our backs against the bar and jam with the band. I am smiling, not wildly happy or sad, just smiling. Content with me and dad, the outside water and light, the music, with what is...

You have rhythms that remind you and ache for you to run in the breeze. Breath these parts awake again. Re-connect.

In meditation gentleness ease and non-judgment are encouraged. As is comfort of posture. Prepare for yourself a soft sweet inner place of silence and refuge where I and only I can always go. Be the warrior traveller of your own domain.

If your heart is open and my heart is open...We beat.

She woke up humming to herself and then asked me who sings I Think We're Alone Now? She was futzing with her I-phone so I could only guess she was looking it up.

I dont know I answered. The Beatles?

In a minute it was on, coming through those mini-speakers of her phone all distorted. I stopped in the middle of the room to listen and I had to strain. But then the automatic motion of my body halted on the peak of my breath and demanded my awareness in that quiet inside way that feels like soft nudging or a sparkle--and then everything else fell in to place: everything stilled. The moment stopped. We were breathing, and listening to the music. Feeling every arc of voice every pause of breath and especially every word.

When it was done I just looked at her. Weepy, like we'd been since the night before. Wow, this is the song you woke up humming? and she just nodded wide-eyed. I always heard it as a love song I said, and she nodded some more than started to play it again.

We were surrounded by friends the night before, tons of friends, but in her animal head she was scurrying up the walls of herself spinning out because she felt so alone. She's a junkie but like me has been clean a long long while. When she finally talked about it the fear and self-hate I hugged her forever and told her the only secret that I truly know: that aloneness, it is what we all have in common, what binds us together as humans! It's what Buddha called suffering. But so many of us use that fear to alienate ourselves from one another when our real duty is to let it allow true compassion to grow. Because really, loving me and my tortured human parts are all I need to be able to learn to love you, and yours...

It was Sunday morning and like I said we were away on a road trip and partying with lots of lots of friends. And all I could think the whole time, the whole weekend, all I could clearly see the whole time was how much each of us, how much we all just want and need love.

I got home on Sunday it was late and I had to work Monday way early. The sun was out so blue and the trees were in that heavenly chorus that sounds so good and feels like breath on Monday afternoon and I was in Caroline County so I drove to the park in the woods and had a little visit with Chop. I took myself out to dinner, a lovely old-fashioned date with me. I brought Dani Shapiro's Devotion with me to finish, it's the story of a woman's crisis of faith and struggle for a working spirituality in her life and my writing partner, Erika, shipped it to me the week I quit my job even though she didn't know that that's what I was doing at the time. It has had me well-versed the last few weeks or so and I've been taking it in slowly the way I do chamomile tea or deep breaths of lavender oil in the bathtub. I got all weepy again, Monday night at the Italian restaurant, when I read:

The human condition--the knowledge of this--drives many of us to drink, to drugs, to denial, to running as fast as we can away from the truth of life's fragility. We think we can shore ourselves up. If only we work hard enough, make lots of money, are good and kind enough, pray hard enough, we will somehow be exempt. Then we discover that no one is exempt. What is to be done?

Wow. What is to be done? I thought about it and there are plenty of things that I do. Probably the most important of them all--I find time almost every day to sit quiet, and I have a special place--a chair that has come with me everywhere since I was 19--to do so. I just sit, and sigh, and relax and remind myself that so long as I can breathe and sink within then right now, in this moment, all is well. Sometimes all I can literally find is five minutes but even so I do this pretty much daily--so much so I almost forget to talk about it because I am so accustomed to this necessary me-time and so reliant on the results that I take it for granted. And I dont do it because I am disciplined or sacrosanct or because I feel like I have to in some rigid way...I do it because I crave the results. I Like Feeling Good. And it's made me convinced--I am the tool I came here with, and I am the only thing I'm leaving here with, so I and only I have the power to go inside me and find, or otherwise, effect my peace. To know and watch what's happening inside me, and to love all of it, which is the only way I might ever change. Love love love.

Love of me in my most raw and human condition. My most alone.

I sent my grlfriend the quote over email. It sounds so simple doesn't it? Love yourself. So simple but what's got us all on the absolute run.

Mike Cades: A Decade of Music

My buddy Mike and I met in college.  He's a musician. We met in college, he was one of a handful of folks whose intellectualism marvelled and intimidated me, and later, whose artistic sense inspired and provoked me.

Mike and I worked together this summer on some creative ideas that may or may not manifest in time to come. In the meantime, he started this super cool project that I think all music lovers need to check out. A Decade of Music is Mike's blog, and invitation to anyone to create(from his first blogpost)a mix of music created from 2000 - 2009 that influenced you as an artist, if you're an artist, or that you just loved the fuck out of, if you're a geologist or something awesome like that. It should be in chronological order but from your perspective (ie. If you suddenly discovered Kid A in 2008, you should place is thusly in the mix, as opposed to placing in the year it was released, whenever that was... everyone knows Radiohead is a pretty silly band without much of a future).

Totally, totally check this blog out. Especially if you're a music-lover, or even just a mildly music-interested geologist or something.

Now look, I love this. What's always cracked me up about that crew from college is how compared to them I came ass-end in to things, foraging the world a bit before college and only coming in to myself, my intellectualism and creativity, towards the end. It's my identity as an intellectual and artist that I've always struggled with, that I've spent the years of college, and after, trying to integrate. The things of the world outside always came easy to me, natural. These pals, their smarts came easy and were never questioned. It was the world that, post-college, challenged them to enlist their creativity in order to associate. So of course their music is smart, eclectic, emotional, hugely ranging.

For facebook I recently put together a list of artists that inspired and changed me through out my teens. For the better part of the 2000's I wasn't taking much new music in. Mike's blog made me realize my illiteracy in this area--the last decade of music. It delights me to see the variety on his blog, makes me realize the great accessibility of the Internet and what this era has done for art. At first I was quick to jump on board with the claim that the great milieu of info and variety out there really only made for a flood of crap, no way to find the great stuff. But I realize now that new standards are cut precisely when a playing field gets leveled.
I think people talented as Mike are the ones who will cut those new prototypes.

Shampoo My Planet & call me X

You know, it's late and I put in over 10 hours today and have to be back it at 8 tmrw. But I've been up blog rolling and living in the cyber dream of future days when I have my little shack & it's all tribe and art and self-education and off the books schooling of new generations of tribe and calling and new fearless ethics and Poetry as Real Work and so on and yea, it's late, and this little river, and, well you know...I could go on and on.

Anyway. Serendipity!? I got in to all this meat on Friday in my memoir, wrote for 5 and a half hours at the Panera, then took a break for dinner and convo for about an hour and a half, then got back to it, writing til well past midnite. I was writing a lot about the 90's, riot grl, coming up, tribes, death, the duende, imagnation and it's doomed demise.

Read this post! Yes! Not so much for the Pumpkins myself, but damned if Friday I didn't spend an hour in urging longing wistfullness over the first Lolla, & Janes Addiction, 1991....

9 Songs: Mix Tape for a Rainy Ass Morning

Here's what I've learned.

I remember the exact moment it was concretized, too. It was the end of this past February, I was snowed-in at Choptank, my phone fell in a cup of tea and short-circuited so I was fully isolated, my heart was slithered and sliced which is a bitter and hideous thing worse than just being broken, and I was coming off five days of a terrible fever and ear/sinus infection that literally had me delirious on and off.

It was a dark, dark time. And then I had a moment, when I was literally laying on the floor in the living room thinking there was no lower I could go, when I realized. Well, I could just get up, and go pay bills.

And damn it if that's not what I did. I got out of my dragged down ludicrously depressed hopeless and numbed out nebulous swirl of funk place and got my bills and all this paperwork that had stacked and felt gnarly consuming and slowly, one by one, centered myself on getting through each piece of it.

Then I got a shovel and started to dig my way out of the driveway, which is when Life met me halfway and the neighbor plowed me out.

So, that's me. how I'm wired, Shit piles up and I feel victimized and bitter about the whole damn mess. Till I remember: just get your miserable pathetic ass up. And go pay the bills. Or, as this morning: and go do your dishes, then go to work and finish your damn LWIS and get your new students registered. This attitude, to Just show up, and be willing for life to meet me half-way, is my interpretation of the old Irish axiom that, especially through the winter, is my motto:
IS THIS A CLOSED FIGHT< OR CAN ANYBODY JOIN?

I'm saying, so long as I'm breathing, I got a fighting shot for the joy and the beauty, the heartaches and the pain...

Which, more or less, is what this morning's special little mix fired-up in me...

1. Cygnet Committee, David Bowie
2. Complimentary Me, Elizabeth & The Catapult
3. The Cool, Cool River, Paul Simon
4. Sonic Teenager, The Took
5. Last Dance, The Cure
6. Slow Down Gandhi, Sage Francis
7. Ball & Bisquit, The White Stripes
8. The Story, Brandi Carlile
9. Take It In, The Waifs

Listen to those three links for some wailen, fighten theme music
